By installing it from the Shopify App Store, you can immediately start selling EPUB, MOBI and PDF files through your Shopify store without worrying about users publishing your books online for free.
Getting started
Install the app. Find LemonInk in the Shopify App Store and install it in your store. You'll be taken back to LemonInk to connect the store to your account — pick an existing account or create a new one.
Add your files. Go to Your files and upload the ebooks you want to sell. LemonInk uses these master files to generate a personalised, watermarked copy for every buyer.
Link products to files. On each file, search for the matching product from your Shopify store and link them together. You only need to link the products that should be watermarked — LemonInk automatically skips any order line it doesn't recognise. The product picker reads variants straight from your store, so you can link a specific variant when needed.
Show the download link at checkout. On the store page you'll find the LemonInk app block — add it to your Thank you and Order status pages from Shopify's checkout customisation. That's where your customers will pick up their watermarked files after buying.
How orders are handled
Once everything is linked, there's nothing left to do. When a customer places an order and it's marked as paid, Shopify notifies LemonInk, we watermark the matching files with the buyer's details and make the download link available on the order — ready on the Thank you and Order status pages. You'll see every order appear on your store's dashboard within seconds.

How does ebook watermarking work?
LemonInk is a cloud service used to secure digital books from piracy. It applies a digital watermark to each purchased ebook making it unique and traceable.

After each purchase LemonInk will create watermarked versions of your ebooks and attach them to the user’s order allowing them to easily download their individual copies.

Each file is digitally marked both visibly (by adding the purchaser's email address to its content) and invisibly (by embedding a series of obfuscated markers into an ebook's code).

This technique discourages users from publishing the files on the internet and allows you to track down those who’ve published them nevertheless.
How does Readium LCP work?
Readium LCP is an open DRM standard. Instead of marking the files, LemonInk encrypts them and issues each buyer a personal licence to open them.

After each purchase LemonInk encrypts your ebook and issues a personal licence for the buyer, attached to their order just like a watermarked copy would be.

The buyer opens the book in any LCP-compatible reading app or e-reader using a passphrase we show them at download time. One passphrase unlocks every book they ever buy from you.

The licence enforces your rules. It can expire on a chosen date, which makes lending and subscription models possible. And we're working on adding copy and printing limits support in the near future.
